Youth Conservation Programs

Poster Contest

2018 Theme: “Watersheds: Our Water, Our Home”

Due: March 1st, 2018

Judging: March 14th, 2018

The poster contest provides kindergarten through 12th grade students the opportunity to express their thoughts on natural resource issues and conservation through art. Posters are judged and winning entries will be displayed at the Florida State Fair. Winners receive a cash prize, certificate, and trophy, and advance to the area, state, and national competitions. A Hillsborough County poster was selected as a national winner (Kindergarten-1st category) in 2015. In 2016, two Hillsborough County posters (K-1st and High School) won the State competition. In 2017, one Hillsborough County poster in the Kindergarten-1st grade category won the State contest, and will be entered in the National contest. Local entries will be held by the District to display at the Hillsborough County Fair between October 18th-21st and October 25th-28th, 2018.

Ag Venture (Ag in the classroom)

Fall 2017: October 24th - November 3rd
Spring 2018: April 24th - May 11th

Ag-Venture is a “hands-on” learning experience designed to teach 3rd grade students in Hillsborough County, FL about the importance of agriculture and to help them develop an understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from and the impact of Agriculture in their everyday lives. As the students arrive, they are divided into groups and given a bright colored “cowboy” hat.

The Student Tours will consist of visiting 5 stations representing different aspects of agriculture and participate in a variety of hands-on activities. Schools will be assigned to a tour that will have a balance of plant and animal science. Students will need to bring a packed lunch.

Speech Contest

2018 Theme: “Watersheds: Our Water, Our Home”

Due: January 12th, 2018

Contest: January 25th, 2018

The speech contest provides 6th through 12th grade students the opportunity to convey their thoughts about conserving natural resources in general, and the theme area in particular. Winners receive a cash prize and trophy and advance to area and state competitions. The 2018 contest will be split into two categories: 6th-9th grade, and 10th-12th grade.

Land Judging

Location: Florida Strawberry Growers Association

December 7th, 2017

This competition is for middle and high school students in 4-H or FFA. Students participate as individuals and teams to assess the properties and limitations of the soil and identify improved land management practices. The winning team is eligible to compete at the state level.

Tampa Bay Regional Envirothon

2018 Current Issue: “Western Rangeland Management: Balancing Diverse Views”

February 22nd, 2018

The Envirothon allows high school students from Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties to apply in-class environmental education as they compete as a team to resolve environmental issues in the field relating to five environmental disciplines: aquatics, wildlife, soils & land use, forestry, and current issue. The winning team progresses to the state contest.
